THE EMERGENCE OF BOB DYLAN
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Few musicians have had the impact on popular music that Bob Dylan has. From the moment he landed in New York City in 1961, people began to notice his special qualities as a writer and performer. He was re-interpreting American folk and blues music traditions for a new generation as well as writing and recording some of the most important songs of the 20th century. In just a few years, his own songs were getting international notice and were being recorded by scores of other artists. Dylan was the key figure in the development of what came to be known as the singer-songwriter movement, and when he started playing with a full electric band in 1965, he helped build a bridge between the previously disparate genres of folk and rock.

This remarkable period of time in the development of both Bob Dylan's career and the American pop music landscape will be explored in the two hour public radio special The Emergence of Bob Dylan. The radio program is produced in association with Seattle's Experience Music Project (EMP) which recently launched the first comprehensive museum exhibit on Bob Dylan entitled Bob Dylan's American Journey: 1956-1966. The exhibit runs through November of 2005 before traveling to other museums around the world. Produced with the full cooperation of Bob Dylan's management, the EMP display offers dozens of artifacts from Dylan's career, rare film and audio clips, and new interviews with Dylan and others who worked closely with him.

In Hour One of The Emergence of Bob Dylan, radio producer Paul Ingles takes listeners on an exclusive tour of the EMP exhibit with curator Jason Emmons. In both hours, reflections on Dylan's early years from Robbie Robertson of The Band, John Cohen and Mike Seeger of the New Lost City Ramblers, folk music expert Izzy Young, Dylan's music publisher Artie Mogul and EMP Artistic Director Bob Santelli. Dylan's music from this rich creative period will naturally provide the backdrop with an emphasis on less well-known tracks.
